Pousada de São Tiago, located on Avenida da República, Macau, was originally a fortress, São Tiago da Barra Fortress (also known as A-Ma Fortress or Sai Van Fortress) built by the Portuguese in 1629. Situated at the entrance of the Inner Harbor, it was part of Macau’s ancient military defense system, designed to defend Macau against hostile European nations and local pirates as a crucial protection role. In 1981, the Portuguese converted the fort into a hotel with a distinctive Portuguese style, which remains preserved today.
Pousada de São Tiago is a unique historical landmark in Macau, combining heritage charm with modern décor. The hotel’s unique Portuguese-style design seamlessly integrates with historical relics like walls, tunnels, and chapels. Chapel of St. James within the hotel adds to the unique atmosphere, making it an ideal picturesque destination for various celebrations, banquets, or Western-style weddings. Guests can experience the romance of the fortress as if stepping into a historic building.
